What to Expect When You're Expecting
A Relatable Story with Gorgeous Scenery
Making its box office debut on Friday, May 18, What to Expect When You’re Expecting had the perfect mix of laugh-out-loud comedy, intense moments, and a stellar group of stars. They included Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, Elizabeth Banks, Chace Crawford, Brooklyn Decker, Dennis Quaid, Chris Rock, and Anna Kendrick (The Twilight Saga) to name just some of the cast members. Based on the popular pregnancy guidebooks by the same name, this film followed five interconnected couples each on their unique path to having a baby—from adoption to a couple who finally got what they wanted to an surprise that interrupted their celebrity lifestyle. It’s been awhile since I have doubled over in laughter, gasped in shock, and choked up during some touching scenes all in one movie. Director Kirk Jones did an excellent job transitioning between all five couples scenes in different filming locations throughout the movie and the writers really covered every angle of pregnancy—the good, the bad, and the unusual.
Most of the on location filming was based in Atlanta, GA. Piedmont Park and Inman Park hosted many of the outdoor scenes. The “dude’s group”—four other dads who meet once a week to walk with their kids and share their frustrations (“There’s no judging in the dude’s group”) was filmed in both parks. Rosie and Marco (played by Anna Kendrick and Chace Crawford) shared a late night picnic there as well. Their competing food trucks were set up outside the Woodruff Arts Center. Banks’ character along with her husband Gary (Ben Falcone) also had a picnic and watched an outdoor movie on location in Piedmont Park. Little Five Points, which has some of Atlanta’s most famous shops and restaurants, was the filming location for scenes in Wendy’s baby store and Holly’s bar party baby shower. Dolphins, whales, and tropical fish even starred in this movie during Holly’s (Jennifer Lopez) underwater and tourist photography scenes, filmed on location at The Georgia Aquarium. Other major landmarks included Chop’s Restaurant in Atlanta where Gary and Wendy along with Gary’s father (Quaid) and very young wife Skyler (Brooklyn Decker) shared ultrasound photos over dinner and Perkins & Will, a large conference center which featured the children’s conference scenes. Other unidentified filming locations around Atlanta were a pristine golf course, two different residential outdoor pools, and Holly’s photography studio.
Probably one of the most striking filming locations was for the short but powerful scene shot in South Africa. Holly and Alex were the couple who decided to adopt a boy from Ethiopia and traveled there to pick him up. The view of the rocky cliffs in a small village overlooking the mountains of the Karoo plateau was breathtaking. Met by local villagers in native dress to partake in a traditional African adoption ceremony, this scene was an intriguing change from the familiar Atlanta scenery of the rest of the movie. In my opinion, this is by far one of the most heartwarming scenes of this film.
If you like true-to-life storylines that connect people of a community through one common experience, you’ll enjoy What to Expect When You’re Expecting. The filming locations were unique and made an excellent backdrop for the entire film.
