The state of Michigan is now home to the nation’s most competitive tax incentive.

The legislature just passed a bill that gives a 40-42% refundable tax credit on expenditures within the state of Michigan. As a result of this industry leading incentive, Michigan is reporting over 50 approved projects and almost as many applications. Investments of $250,000 or more in Michigan film production infrastructure such as studios or equipment are eligible for a 25% tax credit.

There are also more than a dozen films in some sort of production stage. While having such an aggressive economic package offered for filmmaking, it is as with any state, only a portion of the overall incentive to find a filming location there.

The 11th biggest state in the country is comprised of two peninsulas, each providing unique locations for filming of all different types.

Filming in the upper peninsula provides extensive wildlife, lake and river, and mountain scenery. The lower peninsula has economic, cultural, and geographic diversity in its cities.
