Pinewood Studios, a well-known production company famous for filming movies such as James Bond, is bringing the expansion of their brand to the U.S. The building agreement has been made for a new studio in Atlanta, GA. The newest filming location will host five sound stages and production offices. Pinewood Studios seeks to build their brand internationally and first presented their proposal in June of last year. They already have facilities in the UK, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Germany, and Malaysia—it is estimated that this expansion will generate 3,100 new jobs. The production company is partnering with River’s Rock LLC to build and fund the 288 acre space.

Choosing Georgia for the location of the new filming studios was a wise and deliberate choice. Georgia has more attractive filming incentives and a more lucrative economy for the filming industry than California, which is why some filming is leaving CA for Atlanta and other major cities in GA. The state offers a 20% tax credit for any film project spending over $500,000 and an additional 10% tax credit if the finished production includes a promotional logo provided by the state. In 2008, Georgia initiated a new incentives program and since then, production in the area has boomed. Georgia has been the proud host of The Walking Dead and The Hunger Games recently. Other movies filmed on location in the state include Identity Thief, Trouble with the Curve, and Wanderlust. On the other hand, California has seen a 3.4% overall decrease in production in 2012 from 2011, with TV dramas down 20%. Sitcom production did increase slightly, however, they are often the least expensive to produce. California has noticed a shift in production to other states, but is looking for ways to bring more filming into the state in 2013.(For more about movies filmed on location in GA, check out the state's page in our Filming in Your State section.)

Pinewood Studios has created over 400 productions since its beginning and in addition to the James Bond series, recent films include Skyfall and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. They also joined with a private media group in China and hope to provide co-production and financing for Chinese film and TV projects in Beijing and Shanghai. With the film industry growing rapidly in many states besides major filming locations such as Los Angeles and New York, it’s more advantageous now than ever for businesses and home owners to list their properties with a location management company like Filming Locations. The chance of a property being used in a production increase when big names such as Pinewood Studios come to the area and listing a property offers the potential opportunity to earn a profit for themselves and boost the local economy.
